OUR TRIP TO THE CHURCH

Recently Reception class went to the church. We met Will, the Lay Minster of the church there.

The purpose of our visit was to learn about objects and items that are important to christians.

Will had a number of items ready for us to look at. He explained the significance and importance of these items to Christians. The children learnt some new words such as font, altar and goblet. Will is going to test the children on how much they remember the next time we see him!

REMEMBERINg ON REMEMBRANCE DAY

On Remembrance Day we spoke about the importance of noticing and remembering those who are brave and those who help. The children took part in a short period of silence.

THE TOWER OF LONDON

The children also created their own version of the beautiful display of poppies at the Tower of London. We talked about what the poppy represents within the context of Remembrance Day.

In Reception we have been learning about books and their features. The children have been learning how to identify the title, author's name and front and back covers. We decided to have a go at making our own books.

Book making was trickier than we expected but everyone had a go...

The children had to use some tools and resources that they hadn't used before. They learnt how to fold and cut paper into smaller pieces and then used hole punches and treasury tags to secure the pages in their books together. This took a lot of concentration! We also talked about how to use tools such as scissors and hole punches safely and responsibly.

In school we have been learning and talking about our families. Lots of children went on to add pictures and writing to their books to make a book about their own family.

AUTUMN TREASURE!

In Reception the children have been learning about the seasons and trying to notice the changes around us and what they might mean. We are trying to encourage the children to be more observant of the world around them. We also had some very interesting conversations about the passing of time, months of the year etc.

What is Autumn?

What happens in Autumn?

What might we see around us in Autumn?

What comes after Autumn?

The children went on a Autumn walk around the school grounds to learn more about what is happening around us. We discussed the weather and what 'Autumn' weather might look and feel like. The children collected 'Autumn treasure' such as acorns, moss, leaves and sticks. We have used these items in the classroom to help us with our learning and made some beautiful Autumn collages.

COLLABORATIVE GAMES

The children were tasked with the challenge of making up their own games using a selection of equipment in the Outdoor Area. The main purpose of the activity was to encourage the children to be more creative with the resources we have and to develop teamwork skills.

The rules were:

1. Your game needs to involve counting and movment. Also think about how you will know that your game has finished.

2. You must think of a way to make sure anyone who wants to play gets to have a turn - make it fair!

The children then worked together to invent their own games. The adults helped as necessary but the children were able to invent games and think of appropriate rules to ensure that their game was fair. Some games focussed on winning and some were just for the fun of taking part! The children demonstrated excellent communication and teamwork skills!
